War Vet Faces Eviction Rap From Landlord As Court Mulls On Rent Dispute
A 97 year-old war veteran vowed to fight off attempts to kick him out of his rented $63-a-month Sunset Park apartment, declaring that he is scared of nothing and ready to withstand the eviction moves by his landlord.
The Norwegian World War II mariner Magnus Saethre said that he had seen the worst of times, even the sinking the of a ship he served when a German submarine torpedoed them, and is not about ready to lose the place he called home since 1945.
The nonagenarian rarely ventured out from his cramp dwelling ever since a pin was attached on his right knee and long-time friend Devron King said that his pal is stricken too by a slight dementia and failing ability to see and hear.
The 55-year old King said that his friend is the ‘Old Man Mike’ to his neighbors and everyone regards him as a dear friend.
King has been a friend to Saethre for much of thirty years now and he attested that “he’s the most generous guy in the world and we take care of each other.”
That friendship, however, could have been the reason why apartment owner Jack Geula is so bent in throwing the two out his building.
Geula accused King of milking the elderly Saethre of his scant resources and the landlord’s decision of hailing them to Brooklyn Housing Court in 2008 was further sparked by alleged complaints from King’s co-tenants.
Geula claimed that other residents of his apartment building, which he acquired in 2006, regarded King as troublesome and his initiatives were largely intended to rid the place of its main source of glitch.
He denied that the eviction proceedings were prompted by his design to do away with tenants who were enjoying the apartment’s relatively cheap rates prior to his takeover of the property.
Geula stressed that his actions were purely for “the benefits of the building’s tenants and it is for the courts to decide,” as he added that the suit has nothing to do with Saethre’s $63.29 rent.
Meanwhile, as the court is in the process of deciding on the case, lawyer John Hlavaty said that the case brought against his clients were purely persecution and not prosecution.
Defending Saethre and King, Hlavaty argued that Geula carries a track record of kicking out low-paying tenants from apartments he run.
He recalled that the landlord faced suits in 2007 as tenant advocates thwarted his efforts of throwing out low-income residents from his other apartment buildings located in Fourth Avenue.
Geula was accused of forcible eviction, ignoring repair pleas and failure to provide working heaters and hot water supplies.
On his part, Saethre maintained that Geula is only after the money, claiming that “it’s all he wants and he should be ashamed of himself.”
The feisty old man assured his landlord that he would stay on his cherished home for as long as he breathes as he allowed that Geula must be dumb enough to even consider of kicking out a fading warrior like him.
