Celebrities have surely done their part in helping the economy, the real estate market in particular, by purchasing houses even during the slump. Some though, have done more than just exhibit their purchasing powers. Take Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am: he actually built is own mortgage relief program.

Talking with U.K. paper “The Sun”, will.i.am reveals all the information about ‘i.am.home,” a program through which the rock star buys homes that would otherwise be foreclosed on and gives them, debt free, to the homeowners. He says,” I rescue families who are losing their homes because they have no jobs and they can’t pay the mortgage and the banks are foreclosing on their homes. All the people we help are debt free, they don’t have to pay me back.”

The super producer, who is also currently working on the new U2 album, also purchased a home for his grandmother back in 2009. He states that his mother was his main inspiration for the housing project.

“She’s supermom and also my best friend…She told me that, ‘No matter how successful you are, we are still struggling.’ It’s those kinds of things that are like an ego smack – great reminders of where you are from and where you are in the world,” will.i.am says.

i.am.home not only provides a venue for will.i.am to purchase homes for struggling homeowners, but also has been endorsed by Oprah and is collecting smaller funds to help with future purchases.
